- Build performance skills
- Explore the South of France
- Sample new theatre techniques and traditions
LEARN
Theatre skills are introduced and
developed through the four-week program. Whether you are new to the
stage or flexing your established creative muscles, workshops are
designed to build skills from whatever level you begin. You will be
challenged by the strengths of your peers in some areas and have the
opportunity to lead in your areas of strength. The
strong tradition of physical theatre in France contributes a major
theme of the program. Other theatre traditions are introduced as well
to give participants a variety of tools to choose from for their work.
.
Intensive singing and vocal work strengthens and challenges all levels
of experience and interest. Singing work is structured within a musical
theater sensibility, preparing the performer to interpret lyrics in
a dramatic stage context. Workshops focus on vocal technique as well
as song interpretation. Music composition and lyric writing create
original work for the final performance.
Movement
and dance workshops begin with body awareness. Participants work on
basics (flexibility, agility, coordination) and are introduced to
various styles of dance. Important connections between movement and
acting are made through physical theatre. Body awareness and breath
support shared with voice work (both speaking and singing) are also
developed in movement workshops. Creating original choreography and
integrating movement with performance are the goals of the work.

Encore!
employs ensemble technique as the underlying structure for both
work and play. Trust, respect and sharing are the foundation of
an ensemble. Members are encouraged to stretch themselves and take
risks within a supportive group. This
approach builds individual self-confidence, while it also builds
collaboration and teamwork skills.

Explore the French Riviera -
Encore!
is housed at the Centre International de Valbonne (CIV), an international
boarding school in Sophia Antipolis (Valbonne) France, the heart
of the French Riviera. Le Cote d’Azur boasts spectacular scenery,
interesting towns, museums and cultural events, and of course,
beautiful beaches. Experiencing the South of France is an important
part of the program. Trips to museums, villages, festivals and
beaches influence the work of the participants. A favorite trip
is a picnic, hike and work session in the mountains overlooking
the Mediterranean. Here, the students are challenged to reflect
the majesty of nature in their work.
Avignon
International Theatre Festival
A
highlight of the program is a two-day trip to the International
Theatre Festival in Avignon. Home of the popes in the 12th - 14th
century, the Papal Palace and Cathedral still dominate the city
and provide a dramatic backdrop for the the International Theatre
Festival. Performers from around the world gather here for
the festival. Participants attend performances and become
part of the scene by performing their own street theatre.
Weekly
- Each week participants work in small groups to develop and
present an original piece of theatre. The work is created
around a chosen theme and employs techniques and skills learned
and practiced during the week. Students critique each others'
work and compare notes on their interpretation and performance development.
Street
Theatre - Our trip to Avignon is not only a chance to attend
performances, we become part of the festival with a piece of street
theatre. This is a new experience for most participants. The dynamics
of performing in the open air, capturing an audience, and staging
for public venues is all part of this experience. Performing in
the great Place du Papes before the Palace is an unparalleled thrill.
You'll be able to say "I played the palace."
Final
Performance -The program culminates in the performance of an original
piece of theatre created and performed by program participants. Instructors
design workshops and guide students as they devise their play. Shaping
and telling a story using the skills and techniques learned throughout
the month is a great challenge.
Family
and friends of program participants are welcome
and encouraged to attend the final performance.
