People
make all the difference: our staff of outstanding instructors; students
who come from around the globe and bring their experience, ideas and
culture to Encore! each year; and the folks behind the scenes who
founded Learning Theatre and continue to guide and support Encore!

Each year we assemble
a distinguished staff of international performers and artists with
many years of educational experience. Our directors hail from Oslo,
Edinburgh, New York, Paris, Jakarta, L.A. and elsewhere, bringing
a wealth of training and work experience from a remarkably diverse
pool: the Hart School, Yale Drama, Princeton, MSU, UCLA, Brown,
Vassar, Théâtre Sans Frontières, Jacques Lecoq School, the Brooklyn
Friends School, Red Moon Theatre, La MaMa, Traverse Theatre, Metropolitan
Opera School, Nordic Black Children's Theatre, and the Edinburgh
Fringe Festival.

is returning for his 7th summer as
dorm supervisor and writing instructor. He is a free lance
writer and television producer
who brings creative talents, logistical discipline and a real feeling
for the welfare of the participants to the program. Including
writing
is one of the areas that sets Encore! apart. Participants write and
perform their own work. What better way to understand the structure
and requirements of a monologue, dialog or narrative than to create
and bring to life an original piece. David did his undergraduate
work
at Princeton and his graduate work in film at UCLA. He lives in Paris
and we rely on his fluent French to get us through the tough
spots. |

is returning for her second summer with
Encore! We have known her work for several years through our sister
organization, ISTA - International Schools Theatre Association. Sherri
was taught drama and headed the drama department at the Atlanta International
School before moving to New York to work in theatre and stand-up. She
has appeared in regional theatre along the east coast and does a lot
of standup work in New York. She is in demand for work shops and training
for acting, comedy and preparing teachers to teach the International
Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum in theatre. Sherri is an incredibly generous
teacher and actor. She brings her deep knowledge and experience of theatre
(both the artistic and the business sides) and makes it available to
students. She finds Encore! a wonderful opportunity to work with students
in the intense four-week program to develop material in a way that is
not possible in shorter workshops. Her natural rapport with students
helps them to risk new things and get a fresh perspective on their work.

returns for
a second year as dance instructor after taking a year off from Encore!
She was head of theatre and dance at Danube International School before
taking up the post of Director of ISTA. Encore! is her chance to stay
in touch with students and teaching rather getting lost in. Actually,
it is more accurate to call her area movement, as she approaches her
work from the perspective of developing your body as a tool for acting
and expression. She studied with Monica Pagnol - a student of Jacques
Le Coq and one of the foremost movement people in theatre. So we don't
go for chorus line razz-ma-tazz unless that is what is required. Sally
works with the students on generating original choreography out of movement
and building body awareness in all aspects of theatre. |

– sometimes known as Encorians - come
from around the world. We recruit from international schools and schools
that teach the IB curriculum. Many Encorians and their parents recommend
the program to friends and we have had several participants follow
older siblings.
Instruction at
Encore! is in English, but English is often a second or third
language for students. Our staff have all lived and worked internationally,
so they are adept at avoiding language barriers. There are many opportunities
to interact with local French culture - that is part of what flavors
and inspires our program.
Past participants have attended Liverpool
Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA), Tisch School of the Arts at NYU,
Emory University, Emerson College as well as distinguished colleges
and universities throughout the world. We have successful playwrights
among our alumni as well as performers who have appeared in movies
and on the stage professionally. Other Encorians are successful business
owners, teachers and lawyers. |

Learning
Theatre, Incorporated is a nonprofit organization headquartered in
Sarasota, Florida. Founded in 1996, the organization’s first summer
theatre program was held in July 1997. Each summer, the Encore! Ensemble
Theatre Workshop in Valbonne, France, brings together teenagers from
around the world for four weeks to study theatre arts. Participants
learn from our outstanding staff, from each other, and from the people,
culture, and arts which they explore in the South of France.
The
ensemble technique which is at the heart of Learning Theatre’s approach
to educational theatre and theatre in education celebrates creativity
and exploration, involving all participants in the creative process.
Ensemble technique teaches students to recognize their strengths and
weaknesses and use the abilities of the ensemble to create a whole
larger than the sum of individual talents. |
